History
Little is known of this man's life until
his late 50's when he became a well keant character in scruffy
attire, which cleaned up the streets of Edinburgh of all the
horse dung! Hence the local townsfolk named him "Dirty
Dick" and he became a legend.
Indeed he'd follow the draymen's delivery
cart the length of Rose Street shovelling up after the horses
until resting here. He'd be invited in for a jar of ale -
or two, and tell of his tales. It was his infamous lifestyle,
which lead his uncle to track him down to pass on a wealthy
legacy left by his unknown mother. But alas the years of hard
toil and poverty had taken their toll. Dirty Dick sadly died,
ignorant of his inheritance.
Today you can still enjoy the same freindly hospitality,
good food, fine wines and quality ales including our own commemorative
ale Dick's Best.
